John Nance Garner dies; active in GOP politics

A funeral for John Nance Garner, an Everett businessman and two-time Republican congressional candidate, will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Everett's Trinity Episcopal Church.

Garner, 50, died Monday after an uphill battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neuromuscular disorder better known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

A longtime Snohomish County resident, Garner operated the Insurance Center in downtown Everett from the late 1960s until 1975, and later became a real-estate investor.

Garner, active in Republican politics, waged an unsuccessful campaign against former state Sen. August Mardesich for a Snohomish County 38th District legislative seat in 1974.

He narrowly lost his bid against former Rep. Lloyd Meeds for the state's 2nd District congressional seat in 1976, and waged an unsuccessful campaign for the same seat against Rep. Al Swift in 1978.

Born in Cheney, Garner was a 1956 graduate of Eastern Washington University. He held the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve and was a veteran of two years of Army active duty.

Garner was a leader in Everett-area community service organizations, notably those for the handicapped.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene; a son, John Jr., San Francisco; a daughter, Lorelei Garner, Dallas; his mother, Ethel Garner, Cheney; his brother, William E. Garner of Auburn; and two grandchildren.
