FINAL RITES HELD FOR JAMES E. HILL

Funeral services for James Enoch Hill, 64, were held Wednesday afternoon, Apr. 4, from the chapel of Macy and Sons in McMinnville, following his death here on Apr. 2. The Rev. S.J. Osborne officiated, and graveside services were under the direction of McMinnville lodge No. 1283, B.P.O.E.

Mr. Hill was born May 1, 1880, at Mattoon, Ill., the son of Basil and Ann Hill. In 1900 he came to Oregon, locating at Stayton. His marriage to Linnie Ethel Conlee, who survives him, took place on Dec. 12, 1909, at Amity, and for two years they lived on a farm near Sheridan.

Since 1912, McMinnville has been his permanent home although he spent many years in other communities in development of business properties. From 1912 to 1922 he represented a grocery products line, traveling into every section of the county to become one of the area's best known and best loved citizens.

He operated the Bellevue store from 1922 for two years and then for the next seven years spent most of his time between Medford and Eugene operating hotel properties and a summer resort in Idaho. For a short time he was at Grants Pass as agent for the Oregon Mutual Fire Insurance company and later operated the Nelscott store before returning to his home here in 1934 to join the Gilbert Tilbury company sales force.

In 1939 he built and started operation of the modern Hill court apartments of Baker street.

The lure of activity and contacting friends brought him back to the road again in 1940 when he accepted the position of circulation manager for the Telephone Register, a position he held at the time of his death. During part of this period he had also been connected with Gordon Carey Insurance firm.

He was affiliated with the Christian church and fraternally with the Elks and I.O.O.F. lodges.

Besides his wife, his is survived by two daughters, Veldna Frances Raudy of Portland and Wilma Marguerite Hill of McMinnville, one brother, Cliff Hill of Sheridan, and two sisters, Winnie Hamman and Orie Ferguson of Salem and two grandchildren, Jack and James Raudy.

Interment was in Evergreen Memorial park.
