Henry was the son of Georg and Salome Greiss. He was born in Littlestown, Adams Co., PA, July 26, 1778, and baptized in St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in September 1778. He moved to Cambria County with his parents and siblings and converted to Roman Catholicism when he married Mary Margaret Jordan, an immigrant from Ireland. Henry was one of the founders of St Augustine's Church, and sold a parcel of his land to the diocese for the erection of the church. He was nearly 90 years old when he died, not 97 as his headstone records. He and his wife had seven children, including John Joseph, who became a medical doctor, and William George who fought in the Civil War. John had only one child who died in childhood and William George had no children, but his daughters married into prominent Cambria County families and through them Henry has many descendants.
