Arlene E. Whiting
Longtime local resident Arlene Ethel Whiting, 80, of Kelso, died Dec. 15, 2001, at an adult care facility in Longview.

She was born Feb. 10, 1921, in Prineville, Ore., to Ernest and Ida (Powell) Mattson, and moved to the local area in 1931.

Mrs. Whiting worked for First Interstate Bank in Castle Rock for more than 30 years, retiring as a teller in 1986. She also worked as a hostess at Waldo's Restaurant in Castle Rock and Henri's Restaurant in Longview. She enjoyed spending time with family, solving puzzles, embroidery and trips to Reno.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Fred E. Menard, in 1976; a brother, Virgil Mattson, in 1962; and a sister, Addie Lampitt, in 1994.

Survivors include her second husband, Duane Whiting at home; a daughter, Mary Ann Vaughn of Longview; four grandchildren, Connie Amos of Castle Rock, Cathie Groesbeck of Charlotte, N.C., Julie Beck of Vancouver and Bill Vaughn of Camano Island, Wash.; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Castle Rock. Concluding service and interment will be held after the Mass at Whittle Cemetery. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Columbia Funeral Chapel. Friends may pay their respects from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
