During the Civil War, John Alston served as a Private in Company G, 15th Mississippi Infantry Regiment; for which his widowed wife would receive a pension from after his death.
In 1876, John married Mollie Muse, daughter of Robert and Jane [née McKell] Muse, at the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church in Starkville. They had four children:
Alma Laura {m. Burton} (1877 - 1927)
John Muse (1886 - 1936)
Arthur Grey (1889 - 1927)
Virginia {m. Cunningham} (1898 - 1973)
Shortly after John was married, he moved his family to Mobile, Alabama; where he worked as a bookkeeper for a large cotton factory.
John Alston, Jr. departed this life on the 6th day of October 1914 at the age of 68. He is buried alongside his wife, Mollie, daughter, Alma Alston Burton and two sons, John Muse and Grey Alston in Magnolia Cemetery.
