Jean Elizabeth Atkinson Collins (1918 - 2012)

Jean Elizabeth Atkinson Collins passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, Feb. 28, 2012, during her 94th year. Service: 1 p.m. Saturday in the Sanctuary at Broadway Baptist Church, 305 W. Broadway Ave., with the Rev. Dr. Brent Beasley and the Rev. Jorene Taylor Swift officiating. She will be laid to rest privately in Shannon Rose Hill Memorial Park. Family and friends will be received in the Centrum at Broadway immediately following the service. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to Broadway Baptist Church or to a charity of one's choice , in Jean's memory, is suggested.

Born Jan. 18, 1918, in Jackson, Miss., Jean moved to Fort Worth at the age of 1. As a young girl in the 1930s, she took art classes at the Texas School of Fine Arts under the direction of Evaline Sellors. There she received an offer to attend the Art Institute of Chicago, but chose to stay home and attend Polytechnic High School. After graduating from high school, she attended Baylor University where she was an art major. Jean and her family had been active members of Broadway Baptist Church since 1920. At the time of her death, she had been a member for 81 years, and was the second oldest member of the congregation. In 1938, she married Jack B. Collins, also of Fort Worth, a marriage of 49 years before Jack's death in 1987. Jean was a homemaker and involved in several social organizations, including the Woman's Club of Fort Worth. The family wishes to express appreciation to the wonderful caring nurses, aides and staff of Stonegate Skilled Nursing and Odyssey Hospice.

Survivors: In addition to her daughter, Mary Collins of Dallas, Jean is survived by her sons, Charley Collins and his wife, Carol, and Rick Collins; grandchildren, Kendall Collins Smith and her husband, Marty, Colby Collins, all of Fort Worth, and Kate Collins Williams and her husband, Cain of Aledo; great-grandchildren, Jack, Chase, Gracie, Crede, Sadie and Lucas; sister-in-law, Nancy Atkinson Raybourn; and nephews, Tom Atkinson and his wife, Joanie, and Mike Atkinson and his wife, Melissa, all of Tulsa, Okla.
