Posted: Tuesday, October 7, 2003 12:00 am | Updated: 1:06 pm, Thu Feb 28, 2013.

Floyd Norman (Cy) Hendren, 81, of Stites entered into rest Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003.

Floyd was born Oct. 23, 1921, in Red Fir, Idaho, to George Elbert and Stella May Reed Hendren. Floyd was a graduate from Kooskia High School, where he earned his tuition by walking eight miles to school to keep the fires stoked daily.

On Aug. 3, 1940, he married his friend, Margaret Nellie Onthank, in Orofino. They made their home in Kamiah, where they raised four of their children and Margaret's youngest sister, June, whom they raised as a daughter. Although divorced after 39 years of marriage, Margaret and Cy remained best of friends until she passed away in 2000.

In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in Hawaii and Corpus Christi, Texas, as a machinist's mate third class in the Seabees.

Following his discharge in 1946, they returned to the Kamiah area to raise their children. Floyd provided for his family as a diesel mechanic, master welder and fabricator. He worked for Twin Feathers and DABCO.

Cy married his friend, Elvira Moses (Tweet) Hendren, in Kamiah Dec. 21, 1979. They lived in southeastern Alaska for several years while Cy worked for South Coast, before moving back to Kamiah area to retire.

He was a member of the First Indian Presbyterian Church of Kamiah, where he took honor in helping maintain its grounds and structures. Cy also enjoyed working on stock cars, hunting and fishing. Cy was the happiest when he was checking on and taking care of family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Margaret; second wife Tweet; daughters Nellie May and Linda Abbott; son Chad; and brothers Kenneth, Tom, Gilbert and Glen.

He is survived by his sister, Margaret Statdman; brothers Ivan, Bob, Ben, Delbert, Lyle, Jack and Dale (Shorty); children Diana Jo Page of Missoula, Mont., William Hendren of Spokane and Jason Hendren of Lewiston; 19 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.

Others raised as his children include June McKenzie of Lewiston, Melvin and Corbett Wheeler, both of Lapwai, Harry Wheeler of Mescalaro, N.M., Terry Moses of Sitka, Alaska, Mary Jean Strong and Ida Ann Pinkham, both of Lapwai, and Andra Seubert of Anchorage, Alaska; 27 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Cy had the opportunity to marry two very special women whom he loved dearly. In honor of both, he has asked that his ashes be buried beside both Margaret and Tweet. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Kamiah Cemetery and at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Indian Presbyterian Church of Kamiah Cemetery. Immediately following, family and friends are invited to a dinner celebrating Cy's life at Nekissa Hall.

The family praises God for giving them the time they had with their father and grandfather and for Cy's ability to touch the lives of all who knew him.

Memorials may be made to the First Indian Presbyterian Church, U.S. Highway 12, Kamiah, Idaho.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Cremation and Burial Society of the Rockies in Missoula.
