It appears that the year of his death on the gravestone is in error as the following obits give the year 1897.

Georgetown, Williamson Co., Tex., March 19. -- News reached here last night of the death at Nashville of Rev. I.G. John, secretary of the Methodist foreign mission board and for many years editor of the Texas Christian Advocate. Two of his children live in Georgetown, Mrs. Stone and R.A. John. The latter is now in Nashville and will bring his father's body to Georgetown for interment. Dallas Morning News, March 20, 1897


Georgetown, Texas, March 19. -- The remains of Rev. I.C. [sic] John, who died yesterday at his home in Nashville, Tenn., will be brought to Georgetown for interment, reaching here Sunday morning. Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock. Deceased has been prominently connected with Texas Methodism for over forty years and was a member of the Texas conference.
