The exact date of John's birth has not been determined or found in discovered Bible Records, but he was a young man of about twenty years old when the census of his fathers family was taken in 1850. After hismarriage to Mary, they spent about 26 years in Gasconade Co., where he was a farmer. During the Civil War, John served for a time in Company D of the 32nd Missouri Infantry. He later served in Company F of the Enrolled Missouri Militia. As a member of that unit he was ordered into active service on 28 September 1864, during the raid into thatarea by Confederate General Sterling Price and his troops. Followingthe Price raid John Crider was relieved from active duty on 10 November 1864. The family continued to make their home in Gasconade Co., until about 1881. The family moved to the vicinity of Ravenden Springs in Randolph Co., AR..

Randolph County, AR. was named after the noted Virginia statesman John Randolph. It has been a part of four nations, three territories, two states, four counties, and is older by one year than the state of AR. itself. What is now Randolph County was originally a small part of the Louisiana Purchase -- over 1 million acres bought from France by the United States in 1803. The District of Louisiana was designated in 1804. In 1805, the District of New Madrid was established. From 1813 to 1815, it was part of the County of New Madrid in the Territory of Missouri. Lawrence County in the Territory of Missouri held the land from 1815 to 1819. From 1819 until 1835, it was a part of Lawrence County, AR. Territory. In 1835, Randolph officially came into existence as a separate county in the AR. Territory. AR. was admittedto statehood in 1836.
