Sturley Cuthbert Armstrong was the son of William C. Armstrong (1832-1897) and Anna Martha Cuthbert (1836- May 5, 1869). Anna Cuthbert was the daughter of Sturley Cuthbert who was born in England Sturley Cuthbert’s will bequeathed property in Mt Washington at Grandview Ave and Kirkpatrick Street to Anna’s children Sturley and Mary Armstrong.

Sturley married Jessie Hamilton Dicken on Dec 20, 1883. They had four children:
Mary Chambers Armstrong, married James Cruickshank Watt
Herbert Armstrong, married Marie Conner
Arthur Dilworth Armstrong, married Edith Mae Locke
Helen Hunt Armstrong, married William Lloyd Allen

Sturley Cuthbert Armstrong was respected cashier at Washington National Bank. Newspaper articles stated that Mr. Armstrong was well known in banking circles in this city and had held responsible positions for twenty years. He mysteriously disappeared on January 2, 1906, and was found dead February 6, 1906 of an apparent suicide by bullet to the head near Roanoke, Virginia. Mrs. Armstrong speculated his mind was deranged from overwork and anxiety, but all his bank accounts were in order so his motivations for traveling in disguise and killing himself are unknown.
