Names, details released in fatal motorcycle wreck
By Kara Van Pelt
Register-Herald Reporter

The Raleigh County Sheriff's Department has released more information, including the names of those involved, regarding a motorcycle accident that occurred Friday afternoon in the eastbound lane of Interstate 64 between the Eisenhower Drive and Beaver exit.

The driver, James A. Maddy, 68, of Daniels, was declared dead upon arrival to Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

The passenger, Maddy's wife, Charlotte, 66, who was in critical condition and rushed into surgery, later died as a result of the injuries she sustained, police said.

According to several witnesses, Maddy, who was driving a Harley Davidson motorcycle, was traveling in the fast lane but changed lanes to the right, as if he were attempting to exit the roadway, police said. At that time, the front tire of the bike dropped off the roadway into gravel, causing the tire to twist and throwing both driver and passenger over the handlebars of the bike.

Police said they suspect Maddy was experiencing some type of medical problem that contributed to the crash, but Sgt. W.J. Crist and Cpl. T.L. Miles are still investigating the incident.
