Mathew was the son of Alexander McClanahan. He and his brother Nathan worked as farm hands for John and Mary Polly Crider who lived west of Santoy in Perry County. Mathew married their daughter Sarah, and Nathan married their daughter Margaret. Mathew and Sarah had five children, James W., John A., Emily Jane, Perry, and Mary Almeda. Sarah died May 5, 1881
