Gordon "Connie" Bennett, 90, formerly of 1611 Greenwood Drive, died at 2:35 p.m. Nov. 15,2001, in Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

He was born March 21, 1911, in Hedrick to Harry A. and Ina Davis Bennett. He married Georgia Bell in 1934.

A 1929 Hedrick High School graduate, he moved to Ottumwa and had a long public service career. He was city building inspector and city manager and was mayor of Ottumwa from 1962 to 1966. He was director of manpower for the state of Iowa in Des Moines. He was on numerous boards and committees, including the executive board of the Iowa League of Municipalities. He was community coordinator of a Department of Labor research project and state chairman of the Cooperative Area Manpower Planning System. He was a member of the state Advisory Committee on Area Schools, Governor's Commission on State and Local Government, Vocational Education Advisory Council, Advisory Committee on Operations and Policy for Iowa Public Television and State Office for Planning and Programming. He received
the 1981 service award from Indian Hills Community College Foundation.

Surviving is his wife.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald.

The service will be 10 a.m. Monday in Reece Funeral Home, the Rev. Duane Marburger officiating. Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery near Ollie.
