James T. McCray is the son of James T. and Ellen "Nellie" Bell McCray. He married Eleanor Townsley November 17, 1791.

James T. McCray served as a Private in Captain Jacob Stake's Company, 10th Pennsylvania Regiment. On September 10, 1778 he enlisted for the duration of the war. In 1782 he is also shown as a Private 8th Class in Captain John Woods' 7th Company, 1st Battalion, Cumberland County Militia, and also in 8th Class, 8th Battalion, Cumberland County Militia in 1778.

He came to America with his parents and settled in eastern Pennsylvania, later coming to Westmoreland County, PA. and then to Concord Township in 1800 and settled on about 800 acres. He married Eleanor Townsley, and had 9 children, (1) Joseph, married(i) _____ Townsley, (ii) Sara Scott; (2) James, married Sarah Blakeslee, daughter of Captain David Blakeslee Sr; (3) William, married Jane Bruce; (4) George, married in 1831 to Polly Blakeslee, daughter of David Blakeslee Jr.; (5) Eleanor or Ellen, married Samuel Heath; (6) Jane, married James Gray; (7) John, married Sarah Blakeslee, daughter of David Blakeslee Jr. (8) Robert, married Betsy Blakeslee, daughter of David Blakeslee Jr; (9) Betsy, married Jesse Blakeslee, son of Captain David Blakeslee Sr.
