Phillip Beamer, the eldest son of Peter L. and Elizabeth (Cooley) Beamer, was born in Carroll county, Virginia, May 12th, 1836.

His boyhood days were spent in the old home and in the early manhood he taught in the public schools of his native state.

When the Civil war was imminent he gathered a company of men, of which he was a captain and trained them for military duty until the outbreak of the war in 1861, at which time he enlisted and was commissioned a lieutenant in the 45th Virginia regiment of the Confederate states, holding this office until the close of the war in 1865.

After the war Mr. Beamer joined his uncle, Jeffry Cooley in Toulon, Ill., where for a time he was engaged in the livery business, and carried the mail between Toulon and Kewanee.

He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Jane Gurney, of Toulon, March 10, 1869. To this union were born twelve children, ten of whom survive their father, and were privileged to be at his bedside much of the time during his illness. They are Mrs. L. A. Biederbeck; Mrs. James A. Barrett, of Elmwood, Ill.; Jeffery H., Mrs. A. T. Reed of Galesburg, Ill.; Sidney L., of Laura, Ill.; Mrs. R. O. Alldredge; Ralph R., Glen, Dale, and Mrs. Stanley Newman. Two children, James M. and Alice E., preceded their father in death.

Although never a strong man physically, he was very energetic and diligent in business, a good husband and father, and until the time of his death was much concerned in the welfare of those about him.

He was a great reader and was always interested in the affairs of his country and nation having in his younger days served as supervisor of West Jersey township and filled other minor offices.

After a lingering illness of several years' duration, although not confined to his bed until the last seven years of his life, during which time he suffered a great deal, he passed away at his home southwest of West Jersey, Monday morning, April 15, 1918, at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 3 days.

Besides his widow and children he leaves to mourn their loss two brothers, Harden H. and Noah Beamer of Virginia, and twenty-one grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. L. Fahnesstock and J. A. Decker, and interment was in West Jersey cemetery. The music was furnished by a double quartet, singing: "Sun of My Soul", Beautiful Isle" and "Shall We Meet Beyond the River".
