Attended Phillips Exeter Academy; graduated from Harvard with an AB in 1888 and from Harvard Law , AM and LLB in 1891. He was admitted to the bar in Illinois and in 1893 was hired as an attorney by City of Chicago. Shortly thereafter, he entered private practice until 1903. In 1902 he ran for Congress, but was defeated. In 1903 he was elected Circuit Cook County Court Judge, and reelected in 1909 and 1915 despite running as a Democrat in a predominantly Republican jurisdiction.
He married Beatrice C Richardson at Brewster MA on 12 Aug 1902 and they had one child, Bertha.
