ASHLAND - Mrs. Addie May Rafford, 64, wife of Charles L. Rafford, died at her home at Squa Pan Station early Monday morning. She was born in Castle Hill and came to Ashland to live when she was a child.
For many years the family lived on the small farm beside the Aroostook river, now occupied by Ralph Rafford. Sixteen years ago they moved to Squa Pan Station, Mr. Rafford was section foreman on the Squa Pan Lake section until his retirement a year ago.
Mrs. Rafford was well known to the traveling public. She had taken boarders at her home for years and had a wide acquaintance with railroad employees and visiting sportsmen. The Rafford's have several sporting camps at Squa Pan Lake and for the past 10 years have operated a general store and filling station at South Ashland. Mrs. Rafford was always associated with railroad work and her two sons found employment on the line. Ray L. Rafford is station agent at Ashland and Ralph Rafford is agent at Squa Pan. Mrs. Rafford had been ill about two weeks. She was a woman of fine character and keen business ability. She had many friends in this and surrounding towns.
Funeral services were held at the home in South Ashland Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Rev Robert Haldane of Ashland Congregational church was the officiating clergyman.
The home was filled with relatives and friends. There were many flowers. Bearers were Gilman Brewer, Harold Sutherland, Raymond Davenport, Linwood Winslow and Clair Pollard. Among the out of town people at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Burleigh and sons, Dana and Charles of Millinocket; Rodney Brewer and Mr. and Mrs. T. I. Brewer of Crouseville; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wood of Bridgewater; and Mr. and Mrs. Alton Stimpson of Mapleton. Interment was in the Ashland Cemetery.
