Son of John and Maryann Hemsworth, husband of Elizabeth Jane Price, the daughter of Edwin Price and Jane Deane and father of William John, Alfred Godfrey Crump, George Edward, Gertrude Jane, Thomas Henry, Eva Mary, Elizabeth Maud and Hazel Lilly Hemsworth.

The son of a school teacher and farmer, he married Elizabeth Jane Price on the 30th of December 1873 at the Church of England in Melbourne, Quebec, a small community across the river from Richmond, Quebec. John and Elizabeth had their three youngest children while in Montreal. They also lived on Forfar Avenue, in an area known affectionately by the residents there as Goose Village, and he lived at No.'s 136 1/2, 04 and 133 Forfar. He was living at 133 at the time of his death.
