In the 1850 Census, Clarance, her twin brother, Charles (1), and older sister, Martha, are enumerated with surname "Carlile"(2) in the HH of their mother's marriage to Elias Swan. By the time of the 1860 Census, Clarance and Charles are enumerated "Swan."

Clarance cannot be found in later documents to have declared her biological father by name (her sister Martha did so in her own death certificate: "Elisha Carlile"). Elias Swan was either adoptive father or stepfather to Clarance (and Charles). Clarance would take the Swan surname as her maiden name for the rest of her life.

Marriage to Amasa Rice Converse: 17 Aug 1868
Marriage to Truman Barney Hicks: 1886

Clarance's first marriage to Amasa Converse left her extraordinary wealth as his widow in 1885. In the 1886 city of Cheyenne directory, she listed herself as a "Capitalist."

2nd husband Truman Barney Hicks was an astute businessman and had been "foreman" in the banking and cattle interests held by Amasa Converse. As appointed executor and manager of the Converse estate, and as a widow himself, he and Clarance married. The marriage would be lifelong until Clarance's death.

Upon Clarance's death, she provided for annuities of $300 to both her mother and to sister, Martha(2).

The Converse estate passed to Clarance's daughter, Fannie, with Truman Hicks continuing as manager. Upon Fannie's death, the estate was executed by her own husband for their two daughters as beneficiaries.

(1) Charles died of disease during the Civil War. Note his biography in his FAG registration.

(2)) I declare "Carlile" to be a variant or misspelling for surname "Carlisle."

(3) Martha G. Andrews nee Carlisle (Clarance's sister) was the wife of Norman S. Andrews (#27047111), a founder of Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers, MI.
