He was born November 18, 1919, in Glen Rock, a son of the late Howard E. and Maggie (Lucabaugh) Black.
Robert was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, New Freedom and a member of St. John Jewels. He was a forty year Charter member of Shrewsbury Lions Club, having served as Secretary for thirty-two years.Robert retired from McCrory McClellan Distribution Center as a Sample Room Manager. Robert was drafted February 24, 1942, into the Army Infantry Division and served as a Staff Sergeant until he was honorably discharged in October 1945. He saw action in the Asiatic Pacific, Guadalcanal, Villa La Vella and the Philippine Islands and was awarded a Bronze Star in 2000.Robert and Theresa loved traveling and visited all 50 states and many countries. He was an avid gardener, enjoyed wood working, reading and celebrating family events.Robert loved his family and was very proud of each of them.
In addition to his wife, Theresa, he is survived by two daughters, Melissa B. Graver and husband, Dennis of York, and Denise B. Goble and husband, Robert of Shrewsbury; a son, Gregory R. Black and wife, Sandra of Shrewsbury; four grandchildren, Benjamin and Heidi Graver, Nicolle Clements and husband, Adric and Nathanael Goble; a sister, Mary Werner of York; one sister-in-law, Ida Black of New Freedom; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, February 27, 2012, at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 315 N. Constitution Ave., New Freedom. The Funeral Liturgy will begin Monday at 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Sylvan P. Capitani, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military rites by York County Veterans Honor Guard.
