Marie "Mother Bast" was the matriarch of the East Clarno Zion church. She hosted Evangelical pastor Mathias Hauert in her home in about 1860 and later at Haddinger school as the congregation grew until the church which still stands was built in 1875.

Monroe Journal, 26 March 1913:
PIONEER RESIDENT PASSES AWAY-Mother of Mrs. M.L. Gloege Lived To Be Nearly Ninety,
Anna Maria Zabel Bast, widow of the late F. William Bast, born in Doelitz, Prussia,in Germany, Sept. 20, 1823, came to the United States in 1854, settled near Watertown, N. Y. and in 1857 came by ox team to Wisconsin settling on the farm in Clarno township,,this county where, where she resided until the death of Mr. Bast in 1892 when she came to Monroe to reside with her daughter, Mrs. H.L. Gloege, later going to reside with another daughter, Mrs. Herman J. Schroeder in Clarno, where she died Tuesday evening at the age of nearly 90. Her death was due to old age but hastened by a stroke of Paralysis. She was cheerful and got up assisted Tuesday morning but grew weak in the afternoon and fell into unconsciousness after the stroke from which she did not rally.
Mrs. Bast was well known throughout Clarno and as long as she was able, was of great assistance to her neighbors when they were in need. She became a member of the Evangelical church in 1858 and in 1860 became a charter member of Emanuel Society of Monroe.
Mrs. Bast leaves one son and three daughters: M.F. Bast of Ramona, S. Da., Mrs. D.Sophia Gloege of this city, Mrs. Julia Schroeder of Clarno, and Mrs. Emma Trumpy of Santa Anna, Cal. One daughter, Mrs. Ernestine Schroeder, preceded her in death. She also leaves a brother, William Zabel, of Paynesville, Minn., and twenty-five grandchildren and thirty two great grandchildren.
The funeral will be held on Friday, from the home of Herman J. Schroeder in Clarno at 12 o'clock followed by a brief service in the Richland Evangelical in the churchyard of which she will be buried.
