As a young man, Philip emigrated with his family from Ontario to Plymouth, Nebraska in 1878 at the age of 14. On December 19, 1886, he and Anna Zulauf were married in Plymouth, and their two children, Ida and William were born there in 1888 and 1893. In 1900, the family emigrated back to Canada and settled on a farm in the Stony Hill community. Philip's name appears on the January 6, 1901 Constitution forming the Congregation of St John's Lutheran Church at Stony Hill, Saskatchewan. In 1903, Anna suddenly passed away at the age of 37, and in August of 1905, Philip married Mary Riffer in Stony Hill. He and Mary remained on the farm until 1923 when they retired. At that time they moved to British Columbia but returned to the Laird area two years later where they resided for the remainder of their lives.
