Miss Edith Vogelgesang, Russell, died at the Russell Kare Center, Saturday, May 28. She was 97 years , 8 months old. She was born Sept. 1879, in Peoria, Ill., the daughter of Jacob George Vogelgesang and his wife, the former Nancy Caldwell Lewis, She came to Russell with her parents at the age of 5 years. She was the only girl with five brothers. Her father, from Ohio, was a lawyer, admitted to the bar in Kansas, who became probate judge, county attorney and state representative Her mother was born in Illinois.

Miss Vogelgesang was graduated from Russell High School. She began teaching first in country schools and then Waldo, Lucas and Russell for a total of 17 years. She took a year's work in summer and one year residence at the University of Chicago where she graduated in primary supervision. She attended two years at Fort Hays State College and summer and extension work at Laramie University in Wyoming.

Leaving Russell she was primary supervisor for teachers in North Dakota three years, Then in 1918 she went to Cheyenne Wyo., where she homesteaded and taught in grade school, remaining 30 years. When she came back to Russell she became register of deeds for three two-year terms. In the early part of the century she was known in Russell as a vocalist, but was more active in this in Wyoming. She was a 53-year member of the Fort Hays State College Alumni Association. She was a member 77 years of the Order of the Eastern Star and was the second worthy matron of Russell Chapter 332, OES. She had been a member of Lucas Chapter No. 188 and affiliated with Russell in 1957. She received her life membership in 1957. She was a past president of Russell Business and professional women, Her church membership was in the First Congregational Church. The family home wee she lived at 307 Main St. Was erected in 1908. She had been a patient at the Kare Center since April.
