Hubbard's surname at birth was spelled CROFOOT according to the inscriptions on his parents and siblings grave markers.
The first of Hubbard's written records that I found c1830's in Berkshire County, MA he had changed the surname spelling to CRAWFOOT.

Obituary
The Biloxi Herald
Feb , 1894
Although it was expected, our citizens felt a pang of regret when on Sunday morning last the news came to the beach that "SQUIRE CRAWFOOT" was dead.
HUBBARD A. CRAWFOOT was a native of Vermont, but came south many years ago. At one time he was a successful builder and architect and did a flourishing business. The Harrison County Courthouse is one of his works. For the last 20 years he has been Justice of the Peace for this beat and his administration of justice was alike to the rich and poor, the high and lowly. He had many friends and if he had enemies they are unknown. He was of a social, genial nature and took prosperity and the adverse side of life with the same unruffled equanimity. He always looked on the bright side of life and took things as they came. After 83 years spent on Earth, enjoying its pleasures and ignoring its worries, he left it. His remains were buried over the Bayou by the side of the grave of the Wife of his prime, and the vast crowd of all classes who attended the funeral spoke loudly of the respect in which the dead man had been held in life. May his soul rest in peace
