Elizabeth Helen Riley FitzGerald was the daughter of Denis Riley and Margaret Donohue, formerly of Ireland. She was one of a pair of identical twins. Her twin sister, Agnes Riley, married William McGuire. She married Michael John FitzGerald in St. Peter's Catholic Church 01 June 1918 in Troy, New York. Her son, Joseph Denis Lawrence FitzGerald, told of how his mother and father were very hard workers and taught their sons to also appreciate the value of "work". They raised their sons during very difficult economic times. They saved the money they earned very carefully and opened the little FitzGerald Grocery in Troy, New York. Joe & his brother, Dick were trained to serve the customers in the store and deliver groceries to people in their homes on their bicycles after school. When Joe accepted a job transfer to Oakland, California, he encouraged and coaxed his dear mother to move to California with him but she insisted on staying in Joe's home in Watervliet, New York because her family and what friends of hers that were still living were still there. Joe used to phone his mother every Sunday morning when he knew she would be home from church. One Sunday, he could not reach his mother after several attempts to call so he called his brother, Dick, who lived in Troy, New York. When Dick arrived, he found his mother on the floor, unconscious & incoherent. The doctors said that she probably had a massive stroke about 3-4 days prior. By the time she was found, she had suffered major brain damage and was newly blind in both eyes. She was admitted to the State hospital in Poughkeepsie where she died and went to Heaven. The entire family is all together now, in Heaven, where there is peace, joy, happiness and no pain nor suffering. We can almost "hear" the laughter as they are probably sharing memories of old times and old tales.
