Harley Richard "Rich" Hoffer, 86, of Portsmouth, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Wesley Village at Hillview Retirement Center in Portsmouth. He was born September 4, 1924 in Peebles, Ohio, a son of the late Harley A. and Virgie White Hoffer. Rich was a World War II Navy veteran, having earned the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two stars, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church where he had served as an usher for many years. Rich retired from the former General Telephone Company, where he worked as a pay station collector. He also served as a special deputy for the Scioto County Sheriff's Department for 35 years. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Faye Gordley Hoffer, whom he married August 2, 1948 in Maysville, KY. Also surviving are his daughter, Jana (Dennis) Charlene Burns of Kenton, OH; three sisters, Ruth Whitley of Peebles, Jane Abdon of Missouri, and Dorothy Johnson of West Union; and one grandson, Jonathon Burns of Kenton. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Bruce and Gene Thomas.
