Samuel enlisted in the US Army in 1899, and was sent to the Philippine Islands, where the Army was engaged in the Philippine Insurrection against Spain.
Following his military service Samuel returned to Waverly, then moved to Kansas City where he became a motorman for the city trolley company. He still held this position in 1918, when he registered for the WW I draft at age 40. He moved to Los Angeles CA a few years later and again obtained employment as a motorman. He began to receive a veteran's pension in 1921.
Samuel married Hazel Amy Stephenson late in life, and they had no children. He died on November 28 1951.
