The San Mateo Times, Wednesday, December 14, 1955, Pg. 1:
SAN MATEAN'S STEPSON KILLS WIFE AND SELF
A San Mateo woman's anxiety about her stepson led Palo Alto police to the grisly discovery of an apparent murder and suicide there yesterday afternoon. Alarmed at not having seen her stepson for the past two days, Mrs. Dorothy M, Bridgford, 202 Harvard road, Baywood Park, alerted police, who broke into their Palo Alto home to find Mr. and Mrs. Alan P. Bridgford shot to death.
Failed to Show at Work - Police said they believed that Bridgford had first shot his wife, Betty, with an automatic pistol and then had shot himself in the head, with a 16 gauge shotgun. Bridgford's stepmother who works in the San Francisco insurance firm where her son is a junior partner, said she became alarmed when Bridgford did not show up for work Monday or yesterday. When repeated calls to the home were not answered, she went to Palo Alto and found the lights on but the house locked. She called police who gained entrance to the duplex apartment and found the double death.
Motive Sought - Police said there was no indication of a struggle and no notes and they were at a loss to speculate about any motive. The Bridgfords had been married for 10 years and friends and neighbors described them as "very friendly and very happy." Mrs. Rose Pickle, who lives in the apartment next to the Bridgfords, said she had seen them late Sunday afternoon and they appeared happy at that time. Police said they estimated the time of death at about 7 p.m. Monday. Bridgford's father, the late Chester A. Bridgford of San Mateo, was a well known hunter and outdoorsman, one of his associates recalled and had large rifles and pistols.
