Owen Wade Buchanan, 38, of the Williamstown Community near Perry, passed away Monday, February 20, 2012 at his parents home after a long battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Owen was born July 18, 1973 at Lawrence, the son of Edward L. and Donna L. Alford Buchanan. He was a 1991 graduate of Perry-Lecompton High School. He earned an Associates degree from Highland Community College and earned his Bachelors degree from Washburn University. He was in the process of working towards his Masters degree when he became ill. Owen worked most of his adult life in retail management, first at Bills IGA in Perry for 13 years and then working at the bookstore at the Brown vs Board of Education National Historic Site for four years. He was always thankful to Bill and Mel James for the opportunities they provided him when starting out. Owen enjoyed many outdoor activities, including fishing, camping, hiking, and particularly gardening. He was a fan of fantasy and science fiction, both in print and film. He had a passion for books, both reading and collecting and owned enough to have his own personal library. He was a member of the Friends of the Lawrence Public Library, and was a dedicated supporter of 4-H, National Public Radio, and Public Television. He is survived by his daughter, Samantha Buchanan Grantville, parents, Ed and Donna Buchanan, Grantville, grandfather, Don Buchanan, Lawrence, his beloved Chelsea, Lawrence, his family by choice, Justin and Amy Pasley, and god-daughters, Elora and Elyssa Pasley, of Lecompton, his dog, Little Girl, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and his adopted grandmother Jynell Jones, Perry. Services will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday at the Perry United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Oak Ridge Cemetery, Perry.
