From the Worcester Daily Spy May 2, 1881:
SUDDEN DEATH IN GARDNER
The citizens of Gardner were startled Saturday morning about ten o'clock by the announcement that Francis Richardson, Esq., town clerk and a prominent citizen, had dropped dead in Crystal Lake Cemetery while at work on his family lot. His little granddaughter, about five years of age, was by his side when he died, and his son, Chas. F. Richardson, was a few rods away. Mr. Richardson was born in Gardner February 17, 1814 and was therefore 67 years, 2 months and 14 days old. He held the office of assessor and town clerk. In 1843 he was chosen town clerk, and has held the office ever since, with the exception of five years, when Abel S. Wood and James H. Greenwood held the office. He was also a director in the First National Bank of Gardner, and president of the Gardner Savings Bank. He had a very tenacious memory and was a man of a wide range of information. His wife died a few years ago. He leaves two sons and two daughters to mourn his departure. His eldest daughter, Miss Sarah E. Richardson is postmaster at Gardner Centre.
