Age 73 years. Remains removed from the Presbyterian Cemetery on July 25, 1892. Commander of the Potomac river boats, Columbia and Osceola. The Osceola plied between Norfolk and the District. On April 29, 1813 as James Mitchell, he married Hope Shermandine at Alexandria, District of Columbia. On January 26, 1824 as James Mitchell, he married Margaret Thompson at Washington, District of Columbia.

Captain James Mitchell of the Norfolk steamer Osceola and his son, Captain Charles E. Mitchell of the Southern Mail line lived on 11th Street between E and F Streets, as did John Riley, the chief engineer of the Mail line, who, with Captain C.E. Mitchell, served in the Potomac flotilla during the war.
