Shannon Romaine Hain Abbott Smith Laramore passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 12, 2012, at the Cedars Nursing Home in Charlottesville, Virginia, after a long battle with cancer. She was 87.

Shannon was born in Selma, Alabama in 1924. She attended Auburn University and the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California.

Her first marriage was to Ishmael Abbott, who was an Army Air Corps fighter pilot whose squadron disappeared over the Bermuda Triangle while on submarine patrol during World War II.

In 1950, she married Mahlon A. "Terry" Smith II, a West Point graduate, who went on to become one of our nation's first Airforce jet pilots, flying an F-86 Sabre jet. Shannon and Terry were stationed at the Ethan Allen Airforce base in Burlington, Vermont when Terry's squadron was scrambled to intercept an unidentified aircraft bearing towards the Canadian border at dawn on Veterans Day in 1954. After take-off, his fighter jet experienced a low altitude "flameout" while over Burlington. He declined to bail out of his jet in an effort to make a forced landing. Terry guided his jet into an unoccupied drive-in theater parking lot, thereby avoiding additional casualties. He received a posthumous Distinguished Flying Cross, which was presented to his widow, Shannon Smith.

In 1962, she married a Charlottesville architect, Joseph C. "Jack" Laramore, with whom she enjoyed decades of marriage, and with whom she collaborated on many creative and charitable projects dedicated to making Charlottesville an even greater place to live.

Shannon is survived by a son, Mahlon A. "Scott" Smith III, his wife, Deborah Smith, and their son, Mahlon A. "Terry" Smith IV, of San Francisco, California; a daughter, Cheela Romaine "Rome" Smith of Oakland California, and her son, John Hain Laramore, of Charlottesville, Virginia. She is also survived by a brother, Dr. Jack D. Hain and his wife, Charmion, of Birmingham, Alabama; two nieces, Ginger Hain Hart of Waynesville, North Carolina, and Dr. Romaine Hain Paoletti of Birmingham, Alabama; and two nephews, Doyle Woodland "Rock" Hain of Navarre, Florida, and John Travis "Trav" Hain of Charlotte, North Carolina; as well as many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Almost six months ago, her first great-great-niece, "Bree" Hain, was born to her great-nephew, Nathan Hain and his wife, Tracy, who live in Birmingham, Alabama.

Shannon was always interested in the theater and film production. She and her husband, Jack Laramore produced several documentaries in Charlottesville. She was an excellent film editor, and she and Jack taught a teenage animation class for several years. Shannon also was an actress, including a speaking role in the Oscar-winning film "Blue Sky" with Jessica Lange and Tommy Lee Jones. Funeral plans are incomplete.
