Helen Panagakos Simon, age 92, resident of Hickory, NC, died Monday Feb. 13, 2012 surrounded by her loving family, at Lutheran Home Hickory West after a long illness. She was received into the arms of her savior Jesus Christ.
Helen was born in Concord, NC, May 17, 1919, daughter of the late Katherine Cocoras and George Panagakos of Sparta Greece.
She was one of 7 siblings who grew up together in Greenville, SC, in a vibrant, Greek community. She resided in Hickory, NC, for the last twenty years enjoying her great grandchildren. Everyone who knew her loved her for her friendly, generous nature.
She was predeceased by husband George Simon in 1977; brothers Nick Panagakos, Alex Panagakos, Pete Panagakos, Andrew Panagakos and Jimmy Panagakos; nephew George Panagakos ; and niece Maria Panagakos.
Helen is survived by her daughter Georgia S. Mullins and son in law, Joe Mullins of Hickory, three grandchildren : Andrea Ackermann and husband Michael Ackermann of Holly Springs, NC, Jimmy Mullins and wife Shannon Mullins of Hickory, Jackie Ikerd and husband Mark Ikerd of Hickory. Nine Great Grandchildren, Paul Ackermann, and wife Sara Ackermann, Maria Ackermann, Amy Ackermann, Mark Ackermann and Matthew Ackermann, Hayden Ikerd, Jeslea Ikerd, Luke Ikerd and Ella Ikerd. Helen is survived by her sister, Mary M. Masterson and brother in law Charles M, Masterson, of Summerville, SC, sister in law, Florence Panagakos, of Greenville, SC and sister in law Sue Panagakos of Piedmont, SC. She is also survived by many loving nephews and nieces.
Services will be held Friday, Feb. 17th at Bass-Smith Funeral home at 2:00pm with the Reverend Dwight Stone officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm. A graveside service will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
