In a affidavit for pension on 31 May 1917, Sarah related her early life.
She said she was born on 21 Jan 1838 and was of Irish parentage, both of her parents coming from Ireland.
She said she didn't know if she was born on the ocean after they left Ireland or soon after they arrived in the USA.
Her parents both died when she was between 2 and 3 years old, and she was the only living member of the family. As far as she knew, there was no record of her birth.
She was cared for by some friends, in southern Ohio until she was 11 years old (about 1849), at which time she was "bound Out" by a family by the name of MAGEE (Richard Magee, Dist. 14, Union Township, Muskingum Co., Ohio--per 3 Oct. 1850 Census) until 1857, when she was 18 years old.
Sarah Jane said she then left the Magee family and lived in Newark, Licking County, Ohio from 1857 until her marriage to Robert Albert Miller.
