Dear Aunt Lulu and Uncle Emery [Smith],
I told Dagny I would write and tell you of their tragedy. On the evening of Jan. 4th Dagny, Oliver, and their two children were in the car. They had gone to the veterinary to pick up a female kitten which had been spayed. Dagny was driving. She asked the children if they had a window open in the back seat. Stevie, the oldest, said 'No, mamma, but this door isn't closed'. Before she or Oliver could warn them, he had opened the door to pull it tight shut and had fallen out on the pavement. Oliver rushed out and picked him up and they went right to a doctor's office but he died before they could get him to the hospital. Never regained consciousness; fractured his skull. Dagny said they weren't driving faster than 20 miles an hour and were almost home.
Maude and Mary had been up here for Christmas and had gone home on the 29th of December. Mary had been down in bed with flu or diahrea or something similar, and couldn't go. Maud came up on the bus. Gene did all the calling he could for Oliver, and we went over on Friday. All of Dagny's family came right away. She has one sister, Judy, who is married who came with her husband and step-father on Friday. Dagny's sister Norma and her mother arrived right after the accident on Wednesday night.
The minister preached a lovely service. If Dagny can remember any of what he said, she will be happy for his words were very helpful. He used all the Bible references about God's love for children. Two songs were sung: 'Safe in the Arms of Jesus', and 'Beautiful Isle of Somewhere'. The flowers were just beautiful. The burial service was just as nice and he was buried in a plot in a nice memorial park just outside of Bakersfield.
Their neighbors were just wonderful; they brought in everything for them to eat, and roomed all of their family for them. Some of his little classmates were at the service.
I told Dagny I would write you, for she told us how much she enjoyed having you come to see them. Will you please tell Wilda also? She'd love to hear from you, I know and if you have any other pictures with the youngsters that she doesn't have, she'd love to have them. Must close and feed my hungry family. We all had a wonderful Christmas; the kids got more than was good for them. Will write later.
