Murell L. Knudsvig, 90, of rural Alamo, passed away, Friday afternoon, Feb. 10, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Williston, surrounded by his loving family.

His funeral will be celebrated Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 14, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the United Lutheran Church in Zahl. Rev. David Fox will officiate and interment will follow in the Rudser Cemetery, rural Zahl.

Murell was born April 11, 1921 the son of John and Eva (Matheson) Knudsvig in rural Appam, ND. He was raised and educated in the Appam area. Dad was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He rode horseback to Trinity Church to attend confirmation. If there was a will, there was a way.

Dad strapped his boots on at a young age to farm, hunt, fish and get married.

Murell was united in marriage to Bernice Emanuel on February 18, 1945 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Crosby. They established their home on the farm in rural Alamo, where they raised their eight children.

Murell was a man of many talents and was able to fix just about anything that needed fixing. He was a self taught man and very resourceful on everything that he worked on. His work ethic could make your head spin.

Dad loved to farm and one of his favorite things to do was drive around the fields checking a few heads of wheat to see how they were filling. Murell enjoyed working his cattle, especially calving season, which meant long nights. Sometimes we would find a calf in the house, just giving it some warmth so it would have a chance to live. Dad had a very keen mind. In dad's dictionary, the word retired wasn't there. Hence, he never did retire. He had no ‘quit' in him.

Dad loved sports and was a good ball player. In later years, he would listen to the Keybirds and Coyotes on the radio.

Murell loved to live and was a very kind, big hearted and generous man. But most of all, he loved God, his family and always enjoyed having a house filled with his loved ones. He was happy to have had the pleasure of holding and playing with his thirteen grandchildren and three step-grandchildren and with pride and joy he got yet another set of eighteen great-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren. We will miss his humor. Murell was his own man.

Murell served on the Elmgren School Board and the Rusder Church Council. Mom and Dad made sure their children were baptized, attended Sunday School, got an education and attended church together as a family.

It wasn't unusual to hear dad say, "I've been thinking ........." We love you, Dad.

Murell is survived by his wife, Bernice of Alamo; his sons, Gary (Linda) of Williston, and their children, Amy and Aaron, son, Larry (Glennis) of Minot, and their children, Troy, Tracey and Tom, son, Gene (Roxi) of Alamo, and their children, Brad and Cassi; his daughters, LaRene Magnuson of Gillette, Wyo., and her children, Nicole, Michael and Lindsay, daughter, Donna Vessar of Gillette, WY, and her children, Nathan and Kim, daughter, Darlene (Larry) Geltel of Williston, and their children Kevin and Katie, daughter, Pat (Don) Bilbrey of Belgrade, Mont., and their children Tiffany and Travis, daughter, Pam of Williston; and eighteen great-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold (Marlene) of Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Eva and John; five brothers, Henry, Johnny, Martin, Orville and Kenneth; five sisters, Josie, Edith, Alma, Gladys and Phyllis; an infant brother, and an infant sister.
