At the Plainview, Texas hospital about noon on July 7, 1922, a baby girl was born. Her parents were Clyde C. and Ada Erma (Stutzman) Phillips.
Ada Kathryn grew up on the family farm southwest of Hale Center, with a sister and a brother.
Kathryn attended Hale Center public schools, graduating as valedictorian of her class in 1939. Kathryn enrolled in West Texas State Teachers College (now West Texas A & M University), majoring in home economics, she attended summer sessions as well as the regular semesters and finished in three- and one-half years. Kathryn's academic record earned her membership in Alpha Chi, a national scholarship society. Kathryn taught homemaking at Lockney High School the spring semester of 1943 and at Hale Center High School the academic year 1943-44. Kathryn then moved to Springer, New Mexico, where she taught homemaking for four years. Kathryn did one summer of graduate work in home economics at Iowa State University.
It was in Springer, NM that she met her husband, Lewis López. They were married on June 28, 1948, in Albuquerque, NM where they lived until 1957, when Lewis' work transferred him to Santa Fé, NM.
In Santa Fé, NM , Kathryn worked with a cooperative neighborhood kindergarten and then accepted a position as a librarian in the Santa Fé Public Schools, where she served until her retirement in 2005. Kathryn did volunteer library work after retirement. Kathryn was a member of Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society of women educators. Kathryn was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.
Preceding Kathryn in death were her parents, her son, Stephen in 1993 and her husband in 1999.
Kathryn is survived by her son, Ralph, her brother Paul Phillips of Weatherford, Texas and her sister, Frances Phillips of Santa Fé, NM and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Berardinelli Family Funeral Service, Santa Fé, NM, followed by a luncheon at St. John's United Methodist Church, 1200 Old Pecos Trail, Santa Fé, NM. Interment will be in Santa Fé National Cemetery, Santa Fé, NM on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 12:45 p.m.
