COLUMBIA - Mr. James "Jack" Harold Easterby Jr., 86, died Wednesday, February 15, 2012. Born in Charleston, SC, July 14, 1925, he was a son of the late James Harold and Winnie Ackerman Easterby. While attending the College of Charleston, Jack enlisted into the U.S. Coast Guard and served from 1942 through 1945. Upon his return to the college, he lettered in both basketball and tennis before graduating in 1949. While at the College of Charleston, he met his future wife, Anne McKeithen, whom he married in 1948. Following graduation, Jack joined the staff of C&S Bank in Charleston, moving to Columbia in 1950, and retiring from the trust department in 1973. In his retirement, Jack, or "Dae" as he was affectionately known, and Anne invested their time in the lives of their grandchildren. He was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Ellen Easterby Monahan (Thomas P.) of Columbia, and his son, James H. Easterby III (Julia Elizabeth "Betsy") of Columbia. "Dae's" beloved grandchildren are Kelley Monahan Prust (Justin) of Tucson, AZ, Thomas Patrick Monahan, James H. "Jack" Easterby IV (Holly), Katherine Easterby Parrish (Stephen), Kyle Easterby Monahan and Tessa Elizabeth Monahan, all of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Seth Prust and Julia Houston Easterby. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife, Anne M. Easterby, and a brother, Henry Easterby.
The funeral service for Mr. Easterby will be held 11 o'clock Saturday, February 18 at the First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, Smith Chapel, 1422 Washington Street, with the Rev. L. Craig Wilkes and the Rev. David H. Lauten officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will greet friends prior to the service in the Atrium of Jackson Hall from 10 until 10:45.
