PHELPS, MRS.SAMUEL ( DORCAS CAMPBELL)
Dorcas Campell Phelps was born in Delhi, Delaware Co., N.Y., August 12, 1821. At the age of eighteen, February, 1839, she was united to marriage to Samuel Phelps. For four years they resided in Delhi, when they removed to Chenango Co., N.Y. Here they remained for 15 years. In the spring of 1858 they came to Sycamore [De Kalb Co., Illinois]. Mrs. Phelps was the mother of eleven children, nine girls and two boys; nine of these children survive her. They are: Mrs. Sarah Ann Black, Mrs. Phoebe Westlake, Mrs. Caroline Foster, Mrs. J.R. Chatfield, Mrs. Della Gordon [Gorton], all of Sycamore; James Phelps, of Pierce, Illinois; Ben Phelps, of Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Mary Ewings, of Davis City, Iowa; Mrs. Emma Ewings, who resides in Missouri. All of whom were present at the funeral except Emma and Mary.
In October, 1880, her husband died, since which time she has made hre home with her children. Three years ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis; the effect of that shock, complicated with recent and severe brain trouble, ended her life, Monday, March 9, 1896, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nirum Black. Her age was 74 years, 6 months, 27 days. The funeral was from the Methodist church Thursday morning, with the interment at Ohio Grove beside her husband.
