Ernest A. "E.A." Hayes. 86, 400 N. Broadway, Mt. Pleasant, died at 3:20 p.m., Wednesday, June 27, 1990, at the Henry County Health Center.
He was born Jan. 20, 1904, at New London, to A.D. and Margaret E. Ferrel Hayes. On Feb. 13, 1937, at Mason City, he married Ruth A. Irons, who preceded him in death Sept. 11, 1979.
A 1921 graduate of New London High School, he received his bachelor of arts degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1925 and his master of arts degree from Washington University at St. Louis in 1926.
Hayes founded the Central States Insurance Association in Mt. Pleasant in 1926 and operated it through 1958; he assisted with the family management of the A.D. Hayes Co., which owned 12 elevators in southeast Iowa.
He was president of the A.E. Hayes Insurance co., Mt. Pleasant, from 1958-1984 and of the Hawkeye National Investment Co. from 1964-1978.
He was a member, chairman or trustee of many civic organizations nationwide. His accomplishments are many with interests in economic and industrial development. He received several special awards and recognitions for is leadership and abilities and memberships in fraternal and civic organizations.
He was known as "Mr. Mt. Pleasant" and sometimes "Mr. Iowa" for his work to benefit the growth of Mt. Pleasant and the state of Iowa.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Edmund (Ruth Ann) Farrell, Austin, Texas, and Mrs. Richard (Janet Elizabeth) Dougherty, St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren; three nieces, Martha Hayes, Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Norman (Carol) Egli, Corona, Calif. and Mrs. Harold (Helen) Stauffer, Forsyth, Mo.; and three nephews, Ed Hayes, Des Moines, Warren Hayes, Torrance, Calif. and Harold Hayes, Jr., Shagrin Falls, Ohio.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers, Columbus F., Harold and James and one sister, Fae Carter.
Visitation will begin at noon, Sunday, July 1, 1990, at the Weir Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant, where memorials have been established to Iowa Wesleyan College E.A. Hayes Scholarship Fund, the Henry County Health Care Center E.A. Hayes Appreciation Fountain, the Henry county Health Center Education Foundation, the Midwest Old Settlers and Threshers Foundation, and those who wish may plant trees in Mt. Pleasant or Henry County as a living memorial to him.
The family will receive friends and Mr. Hayes will lie in state from 6 to 9 p.m Sunday, July 1 in the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 2, 1990, from the First United Methodist church with the Revs. Deborah Kiesey, Christine Wagner, and Wayne Kamm, and Mr. James Leach, Mr. Robert D. Ray, Mr. Robert Rigler, and Mr. Edmund Farrell. Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.
