STATESBORO, Ga. - Mrs. Helen Louise Gillespie, age 88, died Monday at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. The Candler County native moved to DeKalb County, where she resided for many years. Following her husband, Olin's retirement in 1972, the couple moved to Metter, Ga., where they resided until 1975, at which time they moved to Statesboro, Ga. Mrs. Gillespie was a homemaker and was known for her excellent cooking. She was of the Primitive Baptist faith.


Mrs. Gillespie was preceded in death by her husband, Olin, in 1998.


Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Chuck Garton of Statesboro and Jane and Mark Beard of Chester, Va.; her grandchildren, Maggie and Kenneth Ergle, both of Statesboro, Jeff Strength of Arizona, Amy Cobb of Bowling Green, Va., and Rick Poppell of Arlington, Va.; and her great-grandchildren, Aleah Strength, Elizabeth Rose Cobb, Tyson Stapp, Alysa Ergle and Torrie Ergle.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.


The funeral service will be Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Darby officiating. Interment will be in the Lake Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, Ga. 30459.
