Roy H. Clemens, 62, of Route 3 died at 11:10p.m. Saturday at his home. He was a retired employee of Sears, Roebuck Co., having served as a salesman in the store for 30 years.

He was born in Jefferson County on Aug 11, 1917, the son of Fred C. and Edith (Marlow) Clemens.

On April 7, 1936, in Morris, he married Gwendolyn Joy, who survives.

He was a member of the Bakerville Freewill Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for several years.

A member of many area saddle clubs, he served as a judge at several horse shoes in the Southern Illinois area for many years and was known as an avid horseman.

In July he received the 1979 Golden Award for Proficiency in the field of equestrian events, awarded by the National Flag Race Association.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Bakerville Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Joey Murphy officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the Hughey Funeral Home and after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Besides his wife, Gwendolyn, Mr. Clemens is survived by two sons, Jerry R. Clemens of Opdyke and John Wesley Clemens of Mt. Vernon; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Alice) Smith of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren, Timothy Roy Clemens, Betsey Fay Clemens, Jeremy Smith and Jessica Smith; one brother Raymond Clemens of Cherokee village, Ark.; three sister, Pauline Henry of Chicago Heights, Edith Bryan of Medon , Tenn., and Violet Branklin of Bradley; and his step-mother, Jean Clemens of Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Byford.

He married Thelma Gwendolyn Joy on April 7, 1936 in Morris, Grundy County, Illinois.
