He was born near Fairview,IN on Oct. 4,1875 a son of Joseph C. and Cynthia Armillia (Read) DeVoss. He married Mary Stout on Apr. 26,1900 and they were the parents of two children; John Roger DeVoss born Nov. 18,1904 and Francis Armillia DeVoss born June 5,1908.

Fraternally, John was a loyal member of the Free and Accepted Mason, the Knights of Pythias, the Sons of Veterans and the Randolph Club. Politically, he was a Repubican.
