BILLY FORD BOYETT, 70, Sulligent, died on Monday, February 1, 1999, in the Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham from complications following cardiac surgery. He was born on January 8, 1929, in Lamar County, the son of Lemuel Green and Lula Virginia Ford Boyett. He was a 1949 graduate of Sulligent High School and a 1952 graduate of Auburn University where he received a bachelor's degree in science degree and a master's degree in 1958.

He taught high school from 1958-1965, at which time he entered the banking industry. In 1965, Boyett co-founded the First National Bank of Aliceville, where he served as executive vice-president for nine years. In 1973, he co-founded the First State Bank of Lamar County. He moved to Sulligent in 1974 where he served as president and chief executive officer until 1993. From 1993 until the time of his death, he served as chief executive officer and president emeritus.

He was a member of the Sulligent United Methodist Church, a Mason, a Shriner, and he served in numerous community and civic organizations. His interest in education was exemplified by the establishment of the Billy Stevon Scholarship at Bevill State Community College and the Ford Boyett Scholarship Award at Sulligent Elementary School.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Billy Stevon Boyett, one grandson, Billy Ford Boyett, II, and three brothers, Dennis Boyett, Velman Boyett and Cohen Boyett.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 4, 1999, at 11 a.m. from the Sulligent United Methodist Church with burial in the Sulligent City Cemetery. Rev. Steve Pilkington, Bro. Edward Puckett and Rev. Andre Evans were the officiating ministers. Active pallbearers were Basil Mixon, Jerry Williams, Scott Boman, Michael O'Mary, Mitch Price, Steve Spencer, Lemuel Boyett, and Reaves Crabtree. Honorary pallbearers were the directors of First State Bank and the advisory board at First State Bank, both of Beaverton and Sulligent; Genie Elliott, Shelia Seripin, William Ashmore, Rev. Charles Miller, Rev. Brown O'Quinn, Jack Boyett, Doud Dadisman, Wayne Riggs, Jim Davis, Tim Wadsworth, Jamie Vernon, Hugh Windle, Steve Curtis, Robert King, Dr. Al Stanley, Jeff Herald, Chuck Martin, E.C. Lawhon, Farrell Northington, Earnest Northington, and J.T. Franklin.

Survivors include his wife - Ruth Edgeworth Boyett, Sulligent; three sons - John Ford (Susan Caldwell) Boyett, Sulligent, Brent Edgeworth Boyett and Sandra Olson, Tupelo, Miss., and Joseph Patrick (Penny Simmons) Boyett, Birmingham; daughter-in-law and son-in-law - Wanda Grayson and William Mitchell Price, Sulligent; two brothers - Que Boyett, Millport and Ted Boyett, Sulligent; three grandchildren - John Blake Boyett, Stevon Hunter Boyett and Laura Beth Price, all of Sulligent.
