Joseph Conway was the youngest son of Thomas Conway and Elizabeth Mauzy of Fauquier County, Virginia. He fought for seven years in the American Revolution and was with George Washington at Valley Forge. He fought in the Battle of Trenton. After the war he married Sarah Turner of Fauquier County, VA and they moved to the banks of the Nolichucky River where they raised a family. Joseph died in 1802 at the age of 44.
