On 15 May 1857, Herman Bruegge left his home in Lippehne, Province of Brandenburg, Prussia (Lipiany, West Pomeranian Poland today) and boarded The Fairy in Hamburg, Germany and headed to Quebec, Canada. His fellow travelers included Friedrich Wilhelm Martin Pfefferkorn, his wife, Johanna Louise Strasser Pfefferkorn, and their 6 children, one of whom was Emilie Aurelia Pfefferkorn, Herman's future wife.

Herman is not mentioned in the Pfefferkorn's early family history recorded in 1957 but It is presumed that he traveled overland with them from Quebec to Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. He and Emilie married on 30 October 1859 and settled in Morrison Township, Brown County, Wisconsin. He and Emilie had 8 children:
Bertha Bruegge, 18 Feb 1861 - 25 Aug 1861 (see note)
Otto P Bruegge, 1862-1899
Maria A Bruegge Fuller, 1863-1894
Emma Otelia Bruegge Fels, 1866-1951
William E Bruegge, 1869-1940
Gustave H Bruegge, 1872-1939
Herman August Bruegge, 1874-1960
Edward Frank Bruegge, 1877-1973

Their 120 dairy acre farm was home to five generations of Bruegges and remained in the family until 2014.

Note: The only record that I've found for Bertha is in The Pfefferkorn Family Centennial Reunion July 21, 1957 booklet. The 1900 census for Emilie states that she had 8 children, 5 of whom were still living in 1900. I've found no other record of her birth and death. The above source only provided dates, no location.
