The son of George Johann & Maria Elizabeth (Gastruck) Lamca, arriving in America in 1844. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Greenwood Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 8" tall with dark hair and brown eyes. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 3, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 31 as a private with Co. I, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company June 16, 1865.

Knew how to play the violin, accordion and the mouth harp. Received a bounty of $100 for enlistment. Rode with Sheridan and he served under Col Devin who served under George Custer and his unit was called the Wolverines. John also was at Lee's surrender at Appomattox,Va.
