While residing in Maryland, Mehetable Luce, sister of William Luce, married Richard Morton at Annapolis, MD on 10 January 1776. In 1780 Richard Morton got a Virginia Land Grant for 600 acres on Pond Creek in what is now Jefferson County, KY, for Revolutionary War service.
In 1784 Abner Luce, father of William Luce, moved from Maryland to Kentucky, getting a land grant near Boston, Nelson County, KY. In 1796 the Abner Luce family moved to a farm near the mouth of the Muddy River, where it drains into the Green River near the present site of Skilesville, Muhlenberg County, KY.
In 1816 all the Abner Luce family except William Luce moved to the present site of Eureka, Luce Township, Spencer County, Indiana. Abner Luce was a Baptist clerk in his later years. Since the whole area around Eureka, Indiana was settled by Abner Luce's descendants, the Township of Luce was named after him.
