Died as a result of Lehigh Valley railroad train accident in Aubutn, NY on november 2, 1920. He was head trainman riding with Engineers, Mr. Fitch & Mr. Tuell. The wreck was caused by failure of air brakes coming into Auburn yards. The train was a double-header and was 1,830 ft long, with 25 heavily loaded cars of coal & seven loaded box cars. It took two days for the wrecking crews to clean up the wreck! Mr. Schultz was a former station agent at Willseyville, NY.

The burial of Walter Schultz was held in Auburn Friday morning (Nov 5, 1920) after which the body was taken to Athens, where burial was made in Tioga Point Cemetery. About 15 members of Tioga Lodge F&A.M. of Smithboro, of which Mr. Schultz was a member, had chanrge of the committal service. Mr. Schultz was born near Tioga Centre and was a son of the Reverend Mr. Schultz. After the death of his father, his mother married George Harford, by whom he was brought up. He learned telegraphy of Alfred Brooks at Tioga Centre and subsequently became a telegrapher for the LeHigh Valley railroad at Smithboro and Barton. Seven years ago he entered the company's service as a trainman. He married a daughter of Rufus Rockwell of Candor. He leaves a wife, one son, Lyman Schultz, aged 16 years, and one daughter, Miss Dorothy Schultz, aged 13 years, all of Auburn. His mother, Mrs. Mary harford lives at Reynoldsville. He also leaves a step-brother, Edward Schultz (should be Edward Harford) of Trumansburg. Besides being a member of Smithboro lodge of Masons, he was a member of Smithboro lodge of Odd Fellows.
