KLAUSNER, DOROTHY CHENOWETH, December 14, 1909 - June 13, 2002. Dorothy C Klausner passed away Thursday, June 13, 2002 in Castro Valley, CA. She was born December 14, 1909 in Bakersfield, CA to Lawrence and Sibyl Chenoweth. She graduated from Bakersfield High School, Bakersfield Jr. College, attended Mills College and graduated from UC Berkeley. At age 59, she obtained a Master's Degree in Counseling from Chapman College. Dorothy began her teaching career at Bakersfield High School and Bakersfield Jr. College in 1931, and was a private reading tutor to many local students during the 1950's and 1960's. She became the Executive Director of the Kern County Council of Camp Fire Girls in 1962, and led that organization through many positive changes. She began her university teaching and administrative work at Chapman College in 1968, and later served on the faculties of Fullerton Jr. College and CSU Fullerton.

Dorothy was married to Robert F Klausner in 1934, who preceded her in death in 1971. She is survived by her four children; Dr. Deborah Osen Hancock of Fullerton, CA, Robert Klausner and his wife Kathy of Williamsburg, VA, Dr. Mary Ann Klausner of Eugene, OR and Karl Klausner and his wife Maureen of Castro Valley, CA. She leaves behind eight grandchildren; Lawrence Osen; Mark Klausner and Karen Hoffman; Stuart and Erich Pfeifer and Luke Dedic; Colin and Meredith Klausner; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Stuart Chenoweth of Mill Valley, CA. Dorothy's wisdom and humor touched many lives. she was an innate and lifelong teacher, and you couldn't be around her without learning something. Her interests and talents were many and varied, and family members and friends enjoyed her paintings, writings and especially her poems for many years. She is widely recognized poet, celebrated for her observations and commentary on the perspective of having lived in eleven decades and the process of growing older in this society. She was a skilled and fierce competitor in bridge, scrabble and most other card or board games. she traveled to many parts of the world, including Europe, the Far East, Scandinavia and Australia, often accompanied by her grandchildren, and lived in Great Bedwyn, England for three years in the 1970's.

She was very active in the International and California Reading Associations, the American Association of University Women, California Association for the Gifted, and the University of California Alumni Association. Private celebrations of her life will be held in Castro Valley and Bakersfield, CA. In Lieu of flowers , donations may be sent in her memory to the UAF-Dorothy C. Dorothy Chenoweth Klausner was a good friend to many and she had a positive influence on the lives of countless family members, friends and students.
